I’m fairly new to Linux.  When I say fairly new, I mean that I just searched google for “basic linux commands” so I can figure out how to navigate through terminal and try to move a file into a directory.  The file that I was trying to move was supposed to work as a flash plugin for both Firefox and Chrome…

Well it didn’t work but after searching google for about a half hour I found exactly what I was looking for in the Ubuntu support forums.  Click here to see. I ran the script, restarted Firefox and blam!, Pandora poured through the room.  I figured this was worth writing about, especially since I haven’t posted anything in about a month.

Malicious software may slip through your defenses and onto your computer leaving you with a nasty problem that will only get worse.  This is where Spybot should enter the arena and obliterate all found threats.

Tips:

- Install Spybot now!  Just do it before an actual issue arrives on your precious PC to increase the likelyhood that the Spybot will bring resolution.

- Check for updates before you begin your scan.  This will ensure that you are using the most current information to remove threats.

What is Gbridge?

Gbridge is a free. It has just about everything you would need to network your computer with your gmail contacts. Remote control other computers, sync folders, share files and chat securely and easily. All of this is done through a VPN (Virtual Private Network). A VPN create a secure tunnel through the internet from one computer to another.

This software is for so easy to set up.  You don’t have to know any fancy computer lingo.  Just download, run the installer and log in using your google account information.

I currently have three computers running Gbridge.  My media server at home and two laptops that I use for work.  By using the home desktop as a server, I can always find my files and backup my data as long as I’m connected to the internet.

LogMeIn Free is a great tool for both personal and business use. Take control of the mouse and keyboard of another computer from your online account at LogMeIn.

If you ever wished that you could be at both your computers at the same time, then this tool is for you!

There are so many uses for this tool!  Log onto your office computer (PC or Mac) and find that bit of information that you need to hit the ground running the next day.  Transfer a needed photo from your home PC to your laptop at work.  I personally have over 80 different computers added to my account giving me the ability to maintain PCs and Macs for family, friends, individuals and businesses.

Here’s an application that is hands down, one of the most valuable tools to me and many of my clients.  Not only that, but it’s free!

Would you like to convert any document or photo to a PDF?  It’s as easy as printing to your printer except this time, you select “PrimoPDF” as your printer and voila! Select the quality of a PDF and location of where you would like to save your new PDF and your done.

This is great for many things like emailing flyers to your contacts or emailing an invoice you just generated in Quickbooks.  PDF files are accepted everywhere but not all programs have the ability to save to a PDF.

Making some Juice

My main goal right now is to generate “inbound links” by using various online mediums.  Search engines will view the different mediums and then see the “inbound” links that go to my pages and this will increase my Page Rank.  What is important here too is that each of the pages content is similar or relating to one another. When people find my interesting articles and press releases, they will click through to my site, increasing my Page Rank.

Press Release Sites

I found a list of free press release sites that will help generate inbound links towards my site.  I will post different articles from each site that advertise my services such as onsite or online computer support.

Social Media Sites

The goal here is to deliver information from each source pertaining to Palmetto Computer Services or this blog (PCS Computer Service News and Information).

I’m not going to go into detail about each site’s content but I will say that each page (not too sure about Merchant Circle or Linkedin) contains a “do-follow” link structure that will boost recognition.  If only I had the time to actively participate in each social network…

After becoming a member of each site, I have found groups and people that are related to the information that I have on my site.  I will comment on other people’s posts and blog sites and hopefully this will help people see what I have to offer and enjoy it.  There isn’t much yet.  It’s a work in progress.

Two weeks ago I started spending some time learning Search Engine Optimization tips and tricks to apply to my own website.  Since then, I’ve probably spent a collective day in both education and application of the new knowledge to my site.  I’ve barley scratched the surface!

As a new business in the Charleston area, I find it important to learn the magic spells of SEO to create leads. Both my business’s page, http://www.palmettocomputerservices.com and this blog are running on WordPress.  There are many ways to easily manipulate my website’s information that search engines (My focus is Google) are looking for.  I have a great All-In-One SEO Package plug-in installed that makes it really easy.  With a little motivation from various SEO sites, I’ve finally used his tool to add some descriptive phrases that relate to the relevant page content.  Google will appreciate these efforts and reward me with Page Rank!  Or at least see that I’m not some spam site with random information that goes nowhere good…  Either way, it makes sense to do this so that people can find my site when looking for my services.

As of today, my website can be found on the third page of Google when searching “charleston computer repair” and that leaves much room for improvement.  I’ve only scratched the surface of how to perfect my magic skills to generate organic traffic towards my site.  One of my next projects will be to reconstruct groom the page wording so that it not only gets across what I would like to say but also contains popular word phrases that people will search for when looking for my type of site.

Inbound links are crucial to page recognition as well.  I need some “Do-Follow” links that have the almighty “Google Juice” as Ben Robinson states.  A lot of my time has been spent joining/updating my profile’s information to contain my site’s URL in various social media sites.  I have also joined various online free business listings and will continue to do so in my free time.  Whether or not the free business listings have do-follow power is currently unknown to me but it can’t hurt right?

Coding is a great way to add content to your webpage.  There is no reason to reinvent the wheel when you have access to other popular scripts such as HTML and Java.  Search the web to find what you would like to do on your site and then implement the code as instructed.

Here are a couple links to some other great pages to get you started.

So Bill Gates finally came out with a decent operating system and you want to make it faster.  Here are some tips that the everyday user should be able to implement.  If you have some difficulties, contact me and I’ll be glad to do it for you remotely.  I will post more as I get the time.  Stay posted…

1.  Uninstall Useless Applications

- When I say useless, I am talking about all the corny applications that came with your computer that you never use.  Most of them are trial versions of software that could very well be of use to you one day, but today, there are taking up useless disk space and increasing startup time.  If you are unsure of a program, simply google it to find out it’s use or write me and I will shed some light on your bloatware issues.

2. Limit Startup Processes

Click on Start button and type MSCONFIG in the search box and press Enter.  Select the Startup tab at the top to view a slew of entries with little check boxes to the left.  Most of them towards the top of the list are important system processes that should be running but as you scroll down the list you will begin to see some entries that obviously useless and do not belong in the list.  They tend to support software that was installed with new applications.  One may be Quicktime that came bundled with your iTunes installation or GoogleUpdate.  Pretty much anything that isn’t something that supports your hardware or operating system can go unless you use it on a regular basis like LogMeIn or Skype.  When you are done, click on the Apply button and close.  The next time you boot your computer you may see a new window pertaining to system startup.  Select “Do not show this again…” and click Ok.

3.  Add more RAM

This is by far the cheapest hardware solution to increasing your system speed.  Crucial has a great system scan utility on their website that will allow you to view what is currently installed and what is possible in order to upgrade your computer.  While they do not always have the best prices, they do have the an easy way to determine what your computer can take to increase the overall speed and ability to run multiple applications.  I recommend Newegg as an online store to purchase more memory.
