Internet Marketing for your business should be considered when creating a marketing plan.  This article is intending to shed some light on major elements that tie into internet marketing through market analysis, web design, SEO (search engine optimization) and SMM (social media marketing).

The first step to developing a successful internet marketing strategy is to identify an aspect of your business that you can dish online.  Which product or service can you bring in the most traffic with?  How is this product or service different from the competition’s and how are profitable is marketing it?  What is your niche that has the largest potential for online sales?  Look at the factors at play such as cost of online promotion and what you stand to benefit from promoting it online.

Web Design

Does your business already have a website?  If not then a website should be in short order!    Web design is very important your website is your online storefront and it can tell a lot about a business.  Web design can greatly impact sales.  Is your website easy to navigate for the intended user and how good is the conversion of traffic to sales?  What is the goal for visitors when they visit your site? Do you have a way to convert visitors into customers?  Is product or service information easily found for the majority of people go to your site?  Google Analytics is a great way to track site traffic.  Look at the analytic data to monitor how your site is performing.

Search Engine OptimizationInternet Marketing

Perhaps you are receiving traffic to your site already through an offline marketing strategy but think that you could really increase sales and brand awareness through an online marketing campaign.  One of the major and most effective ways to bring traffic to you site is through search engine optimization or SEO.  SEO is far superior to paid advertisements and services like Adwords.  It’s much less expensive and produces long term results.

There are two types of search engine optimization and combined they are sure to increase traffic.  On site optimization is the art of making changes to you website or a particular pages so that the search engines can organize it properly.  For instance, a computer services business would probably want to optimize their site for the keyword ‘computer repair’.  The owner would want to make the page title, tags and descriptions are of a particular page of their website to contain ‘computer repair’.  This set’s the hook for search engine traffic to visit the site.  There are many other factors that play into onsite optimization but we’ll skip those for now.

Off site optimization is just as important.  This is done by creating a relationship between your website and many other websites.  People use techniques such as directory submission, blogging, article submissions which allow your to create links back to your website.  An important link building strategy would be to target other websites which are relevant to your own business’s products and services.

Social Media Marketing

There are many types of social media sites available besides Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.  It’s good to spend some time identifying which social media site will be the most effective by providing the largest target market for your business.   It is better to concentrate your efforts to a select few social media sites to ensure your followers receive the proper amount of attention.  There are many companies out there that can help you manage your business’s online presence through social media and it’s relatively inexpensive compared to traditional methods like radio and television advertisement.

Social Media StrategySocial Media Strategy can be and should be a major tool in your business marketing plan.  SMM or Social Media Marketing, allows you to to connect with the people who are already interested in what you are doing and want to see what you have to say next.

By utilizing media outlets that are already available, you quickly create a personal connection between you and your following.  The trick is to consistently manage multiple popular outlets (Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, YouTube, etc.) by using social media marketing campaigns to create and manage your business brand.

Say you already have a Facebook, Twitter or other social account but you haven’t really used it yet or know it potential for your business.  What’s next?  With knowledge of social media and as a responsible business owner, it is your duty to spend some time understanding the social media tools platforms are already in place and how to successfully use them to your benefit.  With the right content and persistence, you can develop a following in each outlet and when you need to reach out to everyone regarding a product release or service update, simply post the message within each online community.

Tips for Social Media Strategy

  • Social Media Tools are viral.  People love to share an exciting new video to their friend within YouTube, share with friends in Facebook or ‘tweet’ it on Twitter.  Keep your posts within the various social media channels exciting to grow your audience.
  • Maintain your relationship with your clients.  Keep them updated but don’t overdue it.  Relevant posts regarding your business are keep to keeping people coming back for more.   If you go off topic a lot or post too often, you will loose footing with your clients the impact of future posts.
  • By sticking your thought out social media strategy with proper flow for execution you can avoid more damages.

Things to Consider for your Social Media Campaign

  • Before you begin creating accounts in every social site you can find, ask yourself why you need to connect to my customers.  Create as many answers as possible and use them to begin identify the best social channels for your business.  For instance, if your business is selling independent films, fire up a YouTube account and begin posting trailers. A successful social media strategy starts with writing down as many points of why you should use social media to reach out to new and existing customers.
  • Identify what target market is searching for in your type of busienss.  This is a technique that is used in any business marketing strategy and should become second nature when making posts or tweets in your SMM campaign.  Develop valuable products and services and your business will prosper.  Social media accounts are free.  The information you can gain from them in priceless.
  • Look for ways to use social media to improve your current products and services.  People want to be heard and generally have no problem reviewing something they purchased if the chance is directly in front of them.
  • Engage with customers.  Look for their reviews and consider what your business doing that works and what needs improvement.  Let them know that they are being heard and that you value their opinion.  This will help your business in more ways then one.  While you continue to grow your following, you are getting direct feedback on how to be better.
  • Use social media to review your own products and services.  Other people will read it and be more including to try them or even post their own review.
  • Create a way to quantify the effect social media has your business.  Look for ways to relate your social media campaign to your business.  This comes back to the original point of why you begin using SMM in the first place.  Maybe it is to increase traffic to your site.  Did you see an increase is leads?

Social media is the driving force in many businesses while it’s simply a branding tool for others.  It’s up to you to decide how it will impact your business and maximize your resources spent on each campaign.  The best part of social media tools are that account setups are generally free.  Many businesses use push out the management and progress tracking to a social media specialists.

Palmetto Computer Services is taking big strides in building a core team of web developers and internet marketing professionals.  It is my dream to one day have an office here in Manila.  To lead a small, but very powerful team of engineers that will take websites into the stratosphere would be a ‘W’ in my book.  Currently, I am meeting new and strengthening current connections with local IT specialists, PHP coders, graphic designers, and SEO specialists.

After almost a year of research and toying with online services o find web development and internet marketing teams, I took a much appreciated flight to the Philippines.  My journey started at the beginning of May 2011 in the bustling city called Iloilo, where I worked closely with a highly talented group of people who’s main goal was to launch business’s websites to the top of search engines.  I say ‘was’ because the office abrubtly closed down due to some management issues but all in all, it was an excellent way to get first hand experience in working directly with people on a web project and I made some great contacts.  It was an intense but short trip.  I was given the option to either return to the US and continue working with a select group from the office in Iloilo or set up base camp in the NYC of the Philippines, Manila, where I can be closer to the pulse of talent that I was and still am looking to connect with.

Link building is where the money is in today’s wild world of marketing.  Building links trumps other branding methods such as television and radio advertisements not to mention printed ads such as direct mailers and newspaper advertisements.  The majority of people these days are actively online and looking for what’s next. The majority of people are online and your business had better jump on the bandwagon or get left behind.

Link building helps your site be seen by more people.  The more you build links online, the more your increase brand awareness.  There are many different types of proven internet marketing strategies and not one is the best.  It’s through a culmination of many different types such as link building and content development, that one promotes their business and continues to put themselves in front of the online community.

Link building is just one of the main marketing practices that can take a business’s website to the top of Google or Yahoo.  Search engines looks for these relationships between websites and add value to the site when sees that it is deserved.  By making your business easier to to find, you increase the visibility of your business’s product and services, you stand a much better chance of beating your competition.

There are a multitude of ways to employ the power of link building.  Some business owners take on the responsibility themselves while others look to outsource the work to professionals.

A couple months ago, I began on a project with a few friends to develop an tool that would give people the benefit of creating and storing videos that they could come back to and share with family and friends.  That idea is what started My Own Will.  Many more features have been added such as document creation, (living will, living trust, and Will and Testament).  There is also and online community where families and friends may share their photos and videos within a more exclusive medium than other social networking sites such as Facebook.

We hope to create the single online spot where businesses and individuals may connect.  Legal groups will interface with their clients via video chat, people will broadcast a funeral using a live streaming, and much more.

Create your living will online now.

For the longest time I’ve had trouble locating the trial version of older Office distributions.  I finally found a website that has each version listed and available to download.

III.  Driver Installations

If the computer you are updating drivers on probably doesn’t have a network controller driver yet so you are going to have to install that first before using the computer to get online.  I like to install the network drivers first to check the computer online so that I can download the remaining drivers directly to the computer.

- To determine missing drivers, open Device Manager.  Windows button + R then type in “devmgmt.msc” without quotes or you can open System Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager

- Any missing drivers will be indicated my the yellow mark next to the particular driver.

  • Smbus = Chipset Driver
  • PCI Communications = Modem
  • Audio Controller equals = Audio Driver
  • Ethernet Controller = Wired Network Driver
  • Network Controller = possible wireless driver
  • PCI device = I like to do these last.  These devices can be found by opening up the side panel of the desktop and taking a peak inside.  You may have to shut down and pull the device out to be sure.

All drivers should be downloaded from the respective manufactor’s website.  Try to stay away from google’s the driver’s name or hardware component as there are so many websites that want you to download there software to find your missing drivers and I’ve never had any luck with any of it.  Usually I ended up just reinfecting the computer.  Boo…

Dell Support Site

- Enter the service tag on the located on the back or bottom of the computer to display a list of the computer’s hardware.

HP Support and Drivers

- Enter the product number of the desktop or laptop you are using.  There are generally two P/N’s on the computer.  Ex: an HP DV6000 may say simply DV6000 on the front but if you turn the laptop over, you will DV6119s.  By entering in DV6119s, you can procure a more accurate listing of the available drivers.

I could continue building a directory listing of all the manuafactor’s drivers but in this case, just Google the Manufacturer’s name and the word support (“Gateway Support”)and you should see within the first couple lines the correct site to go to…

Driver installs can go two different ways.  One way, the more popular way is that you end up downloading a compressed file that can extract your drivers to a directory that you specify.  I like to organize all my drivers within a sub directory of  the root folder (C:/Drivers).  Then you use Device Manager’s update driver tool to point to the particular driver folder that you just created to find the correct driver.  The second way and a little bit easier way is that the downloaded driver contains a setup file that automatically extracts the necessary files and updates Device Manager to reflect the newly installed driver changes.

IV. Application Installation

A. Antivirus

- Before you begin installing any other software or transferring data back onto the computer, you need to install Antivirus software.  I recommend AVG.  There is a free version here.

- I recommend other security software as well.  Click here for more information.

B. Windows Updates

- XP should be updated completely.  This will help installing newer programs that require XP SP3 vs. SP2 or older.

C. Other 3rd part software

- Office, Quickbooks, Adobe Reader, Printers, etc.  These programs should be installed as needed.

For a quick guide on how to restore your Office backups from Part 1 of this guide, see here.

- Quickbooks has an import feature that allows you to easily restore your database from a backup or other .qbd file.  All of this information can be found with a simple google search.  Such as “” which provided me with a this page at the top of the list.

Printer drivers can be found on their manufacturer’s page.

IV. Data Restoration

A.  Transfer Backed Up Data back to it’s respective spot.

- If you were able to back up the data before reinstalling windows then I’m sure you can transfer the data back onto the computer.  Use Unstoppable Copier or just drag and drop.

That’s it for now.  I may have missed something so if there are any questions, please comment on the post and I will get back to you ASAP.

II. Install XP

A. Boot to XP installation media

- Insert a Windows XP Home, Pro or Media Center Edition CD or other bootable media (such as a flash drive).  To learn about about to slipstream drivers into a custom install disc, visit here.  To learn how to boot Windows from a USB flash drive, visit here.  There are plenty more sites out there besides the two listed that will provide you with a walk-through.

- Depending on the model of the computer or BIOS settings, you may either manually or automatically boot to the device.  For a detailed list of the various “boot to setup” keys, visit here.  You can reset boot device priory to change which device is booted to within the BIOS settings area.

- When the device’s XP installation is launched, tap any key to ensure that you boot from the device. Ex: Press any key to boot from cd…  You will be prompted to press F6 to load 3rd party drivers.  Most XP installation discs contain the right drivers to properly load windows and recognize the hard drives.  For special cases, you may have to visit the manufacturer’s support area to download and load the proper driver manually via ye’ ol’ 3.5″ floppy.

- After all the driver loading has finished you are prompted to Press Enter to continue to setup Windows.  Press enter and then F8 to push through the license agreement.

- Now you are given an option on how to partition the hard drive for the install.  When performing a typical Windows XP installation, you simply delete the remaining partitions on the hard drive you are to formatting until there remains only 1 unpartitioned space.

- Select the unpartitioned space to format.  Format the partition into NTFS and it’s probably best to format at the normal speed instead of Quick Format though I choose quick format sometimes and have never had a problem with either way.

- The installation goes through a process where is formats the hard drive to your liking and the copies over the installation files.  Shortly afterwords, the computer reboots to the newly formatted hard drive to continue through the installation with a nice GUI.

- The installation require you to push it along with basic information.  Time zone, Data, user account names, workgroup/domain settings and activation and registration.  If the activation key on your computer isn’t working with the installation, try using an OEM XP install disc to bypass the serial key area during the initial installation and the run Key Update Tool later to properly activate your installation.  Or you can use a key from somewhere else for now just to make it through the installation and run Key Update Tool later.  Either way, as long as you are installing the version of Windows XP that is indicated on the side or bottom of the machine you are installing it on, you can properly activate your computer via the tool.

- Once you finish entering in all the custom user information and settings, you will be able to log into your new Windows XP installation.  Now the fun part of downloading and installing drivers, software and data begins.

This is the first segment of a three part tutorial on a way to safely format and reinstall Windows XP.  A great was to extend the life of your computer is to format and reinstall the operating system.  This guide is made for anyone looking to start fresh with a clean install of Windows XP Home, Professional or Media Center.  I will take into consideration as many “what ifs” as possible so bear with me.  There are many ways to go about a format and reinstall, nuke and pave, whatever you want to call it…  Some are better than my way, some are worse and some may be the same.  Just find what works for you.

I. Data Backup

A. Current Hard Drive is working with no viruses

Transfer all data that you wish to keep to an external source such as an external hard drive, flash drive, CD or DVD.

Determine which external source will work best for you.  Take into consideration the total file size of everything you wish to back up.  For instance, if you have 42 GB of mp3s stored on the same drive that you will be formatting for your Windows installation, then your best bet with be an external hard drive instead of using 10+DVDs.

I like to use a program called Unstoppable Copier.  It’s a great way to make sure you don’t miss a thing if you are going a lot of information and you can tweak some of the settings to save time.  I like to open multiple instances of Unstoppable so that I can copy just the folders I need and skip the mostly useless and possibly harmful temp files located throughout all the hidden folders.

Windows XP uses a Documents and Settings folder located within the root directory of the Windows installation to organize each Windows User’s personal files and settings ex: C:/Documents and Setting/(Your Name).  Within each User folder remains a Desktop, Documents, Favorites folder.  These three folders generally contain the bulk of what you are going to want to back up.

Drill down into your User directory and determine which User Directory contains the data that you would like to back up and copy it to your external source.  If you have multiple user accounts, remember to back up each user account to the external source.  If the other accounts are administrator accounts, you must be in an administrative account to take ownership of the other user’s folders and files before copying them over.  Microsoft has a great guide on how to go about taken ownership of another user’s directory here.

When copying the files to the new source.  I like to maintain the same tree structure of the current directory to avoid confusion later.  On my external hard drive, I would create a folder with my ‘Client Data’ directory that described my current client (Ted Jones).  So if he has a user account named Ted, the path to the external drive would be ‘E:/Client Data/Mr. Jones/Documents and Settings/Ted’.  Then I could simply drag and drop, or use Unstoppable Copier to transfer the Desktop, Documents and Favorites folder into the newly created directory. If I were to open ‘C:/Documents and Settings’ and see that there were two user accounts, Ted and Nancy, then my external drive would have to reflect the second user account, Nancy, at the same level as Ted.  Once again, this is my way, if you know of a better way for you then by all means use it.

- There are also hidden folders located in each user folder.  These folders will need to be shown to retrieve Outlook emails, contacts and other information.

Show Hidden Files

  • Open Windows Explorer (Start > My Computer)
  • Click on Tools > Folder Options
  • Select the View Tab and click on the radio button next to “Show hidden files and folders”

Outlook Express and Outlook Backup

There are so many other great guides out there on how to back up Outlook Express or Outlook that it seems to redundant

Here is a great guide on how to back up Outlook Express and Outlook 2000, 2003 and 2007 information and settings.

I noticed that they left out the .nk2 file which contains all the autocomplete information so here is a guide on how to locate it.  And while we are on the topic of the .nk2 file.  I found a great program made for editing such a file.  This is for everyone who ever misspelled an email address in Outlook and can’t stand seeing it everything they go to write an email to that address.

Other Files

There may be software on the computer that utilizes a database folder or file that isn’t located in the Docs and Settings directory.  Be sure that you are aware of any type of software that stores this information and determine the best way to back it up.  Quickbooks is a popular program that does this.  It normally stores it’s database in the All Users folder under Intuit.  For anyone looking for a video tutorial, click here to see what google videos has to say.

Belarc Advisor is a great free program that analyzes your computer and produces a detailed list of everything pertaining to your Windows XP installation.

If you are just looking to find important serial key information such as your Windows XP key or Office key, use Keyfinder.

B. Current Hard Drive does not boot Windows

You can’t boot into Windows for some reason.  The hard drive may be failing or the viruses have taken over.  Either way, you have to pull that guy out and hook it up to another computer to extract the data.  I’m not going to go into how to perform a diagnostic for these sort of issues.  We’ll save that for another day. :)

a. Failing Hard Drive

  1. Connect the drive to another computer and see if you can open the drive using Windows Explorer.  Use the method above to transfer the data to another mass storage device such as a local hard drive (fastest), external hard drive, usb thumb drive, etc.
  2. If the drive isn’t recognized, run data recovery software to see if the computer can recognize any partition on the hard drive and recovery any data located on the drive.  I like to use Data Recovery Wizard.
  3. If you still can’t see the data after using regular software based data recovery methods and you really want that information, you can always ship it off to a clean room.

b. Viruses Preventing Successful Windows XP Operation

This is where things can get a little tricky.  The goal is to extract the information that you want while leaving behind the viruses, malware, spyware, etc.  I’ll go over a few steps that can save you the headache of reinfecting your new installation.

  1. If the computer you are using to pull the data off the hard drive is a Windows based PC, then I suggest booting into safe mode to prevent any files from running on their own.  Then scan the infected drive with antivirus software such as AVG.  You can download it for free.  I really like to run another scan using Malwarebytes and even SuperAntiSpyware.
  2. After the drive has been scanned and any found files removed, you can copy the important information to a good source.
